How to Clean your Lash Extensions?

People often believe that getting their lash extensions wet will reduce the longevity of the lashes. However, this is not true at all. Your lash extensions will fall off earlier than they should if you don’t clean them properly. Avoiding water for the first 24 hours after getting the extensions is true. Even your lash technician will advise you to avoid water on lash extensions for the first 24 hours. But post that, you can use water to clean your lashes.

Cleaning your lashes is very important as improper cleansing or no cleansing at all will create problems and result in the early fall off of the lashes. Avoiding regular cleansing will also cause infections, irrigation in the eye and also lash mites!

Your lashline is a very sensitive area where dead skin cells, dirt or makeup gunk build up very easily. All of these gunks eat away your extensions bond and weaken them down, which results in them falling off. Lash extensions glue should always be kept clean so that its bond remains strong to your natural lash. Dirty lashes will weaken the lash glue which will result in your lash extensions to fall off. When we mean dirty lashes, they don’t necessarily look ‘dirty’, but when your lash technician uses his magnifying glasses, the build-up is too obvious.

If you visit the dentist, you will obviously clean your teeth right? Similarly, you should always clean your lashes when you have an appointment with your lash technician. Also, do not apply mascara when you have an appointment with your technician as removing it is a tedious task. Mascara residue causes poor adhesion and your lashes will not last long. If you are a mascara lover, then make sure that you use lash extension safe mascara.

Benefits of regular lash cleaning –

Washing your lashes regularly in between your lash appointment results in the longevity of the lashes. So, when you go for your next appointment, you return with so many lashes that your lash line looks fuller and your lashes healthier. When you start seeing gaps in between your lashes, you should go for a lash refill. This gives them a fuller and lush look.

Once you have a regular lash growth, you are good to go for good 3 to 4 weeks and then go for a refill appointment.

Lash cleansing Do’s and Don’ts –

Do’s –

  • Wait for 24 hours and do not apply water on the lashes after your appointment.

  • Clean your lashes for 2-3 times a week. If you have oily skin or you wear makeup regularly, cleanse your lashes daily.

  • Use a lash extensions friendly foaming cleanser to ensure that you are getting the anti-bacterial solution onto your lashes to maintain healthy looking eyes and lashes. lash friendly cleansers will avoid the glycols, oils and other negatives for your lashes.

  • Avoid using products that contains oils around you eye area. These include cleansers, cleansing oils, moisturizers; essential oils spray toners, eye creams, shampoos and conditioners.

Don’ts –

  • Makeup removing wipes should be avoided around the eye as it contains all the oils and emollients that are harmful for the lash extensions and cause them to fall off rather quickly. In general, you should avoid using makeup wipes on our skin too as they leave residues on your skin.

  • You should also avoid using micellar water on or around your lashes.

  • When wiping off your makeup, avoid using cloth or makeup removing pads around the lash line as they tug on to your lashes causing them to fall off prematurely.

  • Being gentle is the most important thing when cleaning your lashes. Avoid rubbing your eyes vigorously around your lashes while cleaning them. You should always use light fingertip pressure when cleaning them. Our lash experts in Knoxville, recommend using cleansing brushes. Rigorous rubbing will result in premature lash loss and also damaged lashes which are short, broken and frail and they will not be able to hold the extensions safely. That is why; you need to be gentle on those babies.

How to clean your eyelash extensions?

  • Remove your makeup –Sprinkle your eyes with water and use an oil free makeup remover and gently massage it on your upper and lower lid using the lightest pressure possible. Once you have cleansed the area, splash water onto it once again to make sure that the cleanser is washed off properly.

  • Know what to clean your eyelash extension with – Apply any oil free cleanser on an eyelash cleansing brush and gently rub the brush in downward motion on the eyelid and the lash line. Rinse your eyes with luke warm water until the cleanser is removed.

  • Pro tip – never rub the brush on your eyes back and forth as it will be very harsh on your lash extensions.

  • Pat them dry – Use lint free or a microfiber towel and pat your eyelash to soak away all the moisture. Again, be very gentle and do not rub the eyes! Once done, let your lashes air dry. Use a clean mascara wand and brush them gently through your lashes in an upward motion to give them some fluff once they have dried.

When should you clean your lashes?

  • Clean your eyelash extensions every alternate day. If you wear makeup daily, or if you have oily skin, we recommend you to clean them daily.

  • An ideal time to clean your lashes will be during the night so that all the facial oils, dirt that are collected on the skin during the day can be washed off at night.

  • Remember to clean your lashes post activities like swimming, working out or gym. Use an oil free sunscreen. Chlorine, sweat, oils and salts should be cleaned away immediately from the lash extensions to maintain the longevity of the lash glue.
